Maria Joao Pires “the shock of a lifetime”

25 years ago, during a high-stakes concert in Amsterdam, Joao Pires was faced with a heart-stopping moment when she realised she was about to perform the wrong Mozart concerto. Overwhelmed by panic yet fuelled by determination, she bravely told the conductor, 'I am going to try,' transforming a potential disaster into a breathtaking performance. Three things struck me here:
1- the look on her face when she realises the orchestra isn’t playing the Concerto she was expecting/ had prepared 🙈 I felt it in my stomach.
2- the conductor’s reaction - calm, kind, no anger, no stress, he gives her the space to collect her thoughts… (a lesson in leadership if you ask me)
3- she gives it a crack - wow.
