Milly's comments and thoughts below:
I was convinced I had got it right about the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard case - that he was innocent and she was a liar - because someone like me could not fall to a ‘herd’ mentality or an echo chamber. But this podcast made me realise anyone is susceptible to manipulation regardless of intelligence or socio economic background, that people who would otherwise defend victims can find themselves defending someone accused of DV and how truly easy it is to get swept up in a movement online that goes against all your usual values and beliefs. It was so eye opening and fascinating and made me really question how I consume media and how someone like myself who has always been a passionate advocate for domestic violence victims could not believe a woman who had a very compelling story of abuse. Also made me question my morality and whether it is as stable as I thought it to be or if it is fluid, and can everyone’s moral compass be capable of manipulation? I also used to think only someone who was weak both morally or intellectually could be susceptible to this, but reflecting on how I felt during this trial and then hearing this podcast, I realised that was me and my moral compass had been manipulated. So so fascinating and essential listening if you ever find yourself believing a mass witch hunt online!
