Michael's Share: "Neo Darwinism is dead" with Prof. Denis Noble

From Michael: What I enjoyed most about this was that agency, purpose and meaning is inherent in biological life and systems.

What a fascinating talk. Thank you for sharing Michael! If I had to choose one idea that really stayed with me, it’s this notion that philosophy and science are now treated as if they belong to entirely separate worlds, when historically, that wasn’t the case. I found myself really drawn to the call to reconcile the sciences and the humanities, rather than letting them sit in opposition. He put it beautifully towards the end of the interview:
“I think there is a need for the laying down of the weapons with which science has quarrelled with the humanities, we need to bring a resolution to that. And this is possible: once science accepts that there is a concept of agency, which doesn’t depend on this ghostly thing determining what we do, does not depend on supposing something inside us is the ‘essence of us’ and that the essence of ‘us’ is out there in our social relationships, we’re back into culture.”
And I wrote this line down on a sticky note…:
“We too readily think that we must understand it all; it may be we have to live with the fact that we can’t.”
