Thanks for sharing this, Elizabeth. As a one time elementary teacher, it reminded me of sharing poems with my classes. One of the biggest gifts at the end of my teaching career was how my grade 2/3 class could spend a long time considering the meaning of a tiny haiku poem. They had learned to pause and think deeply. One student came up in great excitement in June to share that he'd found one of our winter poems in a another book and spent time re-reading it. Another student chose to read a poem to me at the very end of the year during a farewell celebration. My hope is that this developing willingness to pause and notice and appreciate will stay with them as they go forward in life.
