There is more than one kind of safe space

Absolutely loved this article by Dr Tim Dean. He distinguishes two types of "safe spaces." The first, a "safe‑from" space, protects individuals (especially the vulnerable) from harm or offensive content. The second, a "safe‑to" space, encourages authentic self-expression and honest engagement with challenging, controversial, or offensive topics in good faith. While "safe‑from" spaces are essential in the short term, "safe‑to" spaces are crucial for fostering long-term societal dialogue and reducing harm through meaningful conversation. I particularly appreciated the point that we need both, and that they are not exclusive but complementary.
