Not the end the world - Hannah Ritchie

I just finished Not the End of the World by Hannah Ritchie and highly recommend it. The book is structured around seven key environmental challenges, each one unpacked through three clear sections: where we’re at, how we got here, and what we can do now (and what we might stress less about). It’s an effective and engaging way to communicate complex topics.

What stood out to me most was Ritchie’s courage in pushing back (gently but firmly) against the more extreme or alarmist narratives in environmental discourse. Her message is nuanced, evidence-based, and ultimately hopeful: we are not doomed, but we do need to act. I understand she’s faced criticism from some in the environmental field, but I really admire her for taking this stand. It reminded me of our last Think Again discussion on whether alarmism helps or hinders progress.

This book is a powerful read for anyone wanting a more grounded, clear-eyed perspective on sustainability. Ritchie’s ultimate vision/hope is that we could be the first generation in history to make life truly sustainable for the planet. If you have read or decide to read the book, woudl love to hear your thoughts!

That sounds like a positive framing of the situation that could motivate people to action
