Interview with Howard Lutnick

This particular podcast comes with a challenge. Truth be told, I had reservations about sharing it. For those with strong aversions to Trump and his administration, this might be a tough one to listen to. But that’s precisely why I’m posting it. Think Again exists to stretch our thinking, explore perspectives we might instinctively reject, and try to see the world through someone else’s lens (even when it’s uncomfortable).

The conversation is with Howard Lutnick, now the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and formerly head of Trump’s transition team (effectively acting as chief of staff during the formation of the current administration). He speaks about how this government came together, the origin of DOGE, and what it’s like to work with Trump.

What struck me was how competent, strategic, and respected Lutnick seems (albeit not the most humble!) He offers a very different picture of Trump: someone who listens widely, weighs advice carefully, and makes considered decisions. This jarred with my own view, and yet… I found myself rebalancing some of that bias, even if just a little. So here’s your homework: listen, and try to find just one or two things that resonate. Not to change your mind, but to flex the muscle of curiosity. It’s harder than it sounds to silence the internal voice of critique/scepticism/anger, but also strangely freeing. I’d love to hear what stood out to you, even (or especially) if it surprised you.
