Edward Santow on Predictive Policing, Racial Bias and AI’s Impact on Human Rights

Ed Santos is a human rights lawyer working in AI policy,  and I really enjoyed his views and observations in this episode. Amongst other things this idea really resonated: we tend to assume innovation and regulation are at odds: you either move fast or you put guardrails in place, and everything stops. But he challenges that a bit, pointing out it doesn’t have to be one or the other. This idea that regulation could actually support better innovation, rather than slow it down, felt quite reasonable and hopeful. It reassured me to be reminded that there are people thinking about this properly, without denying the risks or defaulting to fear.
