Architect and humanitarian Slava Balbek shares his experiences and insights on leveraging architecture to uphold human dignity amid conflict.

3 key themes emerged from his talk:

  • Using Skills in Crisis: Balbek, an architect, shifted from designing buildings to humanitarian work during the war in Ukraine, showing how professionals can repurpose their skills to help in emergencies.

  • Dignified Temporary Housing: His team created RE:Ukraine Housing, a project focused on building thoughtful, comfortable temporary homes for displaced people, making sure they feel a sense of home and community.

  • Community-Led Rebuilding: They also developed RE:Ukraine Villages, a tool to help locals and volunteers restore or design homes in rural areas, keeping cultural traditions intact.
