If I ever had the chance to have dinner with someone famous, Audrey Tang would be at the top of my list. This interview is packed with so many mind-expanding ideas, it’s hard to capture them all. Honestly, I’d just encourage you to listen to the whole thing. It offers a completely different way of thinking about democracy, social media, technology, and governance. Thoughtful, hopeful, and deeply inspiring.
Here are a few things that really stood out:
Conflict as creative energy: The idea that when you see conflict and polarization you don’t have to look for ways to put that fire out, but actually harness that energy and and see it as opportunity for creation. Music to my ears!!
Competency vs fluency: In the context of education, Audrey distinguishes between being fluent in a subject (passively knowing/learning about it) and being competent (able to apply it meaningfully and contribute). It may sound like semantics to some but for me, this shift in langage offers a profound difference, and one that feels especially relevant in our era of surface-level knowledge.
Pre-bunking and Debunking: I learned about a new site called debunkbot.com, an AI-powered chatbot that helps people gently challenge conspiracy beliefs through respectful, evidence-based dialogue. I’ve added to my to-do list to give it a try (if you get there before I do, letus know what you think in the comments!)
Pro-social media: Audrey proposes a vision of social media that builds bridges between ideological camps rather than deepening divides… And again… music to my ears!
