Abbey's Share: Fluent Forever

ree

From Abbey: Language learning, as Gabriel Wyner writes, is one of the most intensely personal journeys you can undertake. What this book does is break down the underpinnings of how we learn, providing a system to digest any language efficienctly. Although it might seem strange to start a language journey with a book on how to learn (rather than what to learn), I think it’s a very big time saver in any language journey and quite entertaining (the author has multiple anecdotes about using Google translate for entrance exams). He combines knowledge of how the human mind best digests information with his experience of learning about five different languages. It answered a lot of questions I had about memory and the ways we can “train” our minds to recall better. The book is also sympathetic to time constraints and helps you “maximise laziness” in daily life to complete language goals - great read!

As someone living in Japan and trying very hard to learn Japanese in a remote area (with no JSL teachers and terrible WiFi) for three years now, I absolutely think understanding how to learn a language is the best first step you could take. I'm looking forward to reading this, even if rather late... Thanks, Abbey. 😁
