Julia's share: America needs a mass movement - now

From Julia: In a time when it doesn't feel like individuals hold much power, or are listened to by our governments, this article's recapping on civil uprisings made me feel truly inspired. Human beings have the ability to be so brave and selfless.

I really enjoyed this piece. It gave me a lot to think about in terms of what it takes to build a social movement that people feel connected to, rather than simply aligning with a political side.
I found the analysis of Trumpism particularly interesting. It offered useful insight into the emotional and social forces that can drive people to rally around a cause or a leader.
That said, there were moments where the tone towards Trump and his supporters felt quite negative. I understand why, given what’s happening in the US, but I’d love to read something that explores the other side of this divide. If anyone has thoughtful pieces that unpack why people support Trump, I’d genuinely be keen to read them.
I don’t fully buy into the idea that all Trump supporters fit a single mould. Some may vote for him without agreeing with everything he says or does; others may simply be voting against Democrats or be influenced by those around them. It feels important to keep that nuance in mind and remember that political choices often sit in shades of grey, not black and white.

I appreciate David Brooks' point of view usually. But it seemed like this article ended abruptly... or did I hit a paywall? Is the last line of the article, "It embraces the optics of fascism, and flaunts its autocratic aspirations"? I also appreciate Jeanne wanting to look at all the sides of the issue, but I honestly can't feign any positivity toward an administration that is so blatantly unjust and vindictive, no matter what it's policies entail.

I'm not sure why this is now behind the paywall, you are right. It wasn't at the time I posted it. Shame, sorry about that!

I couldn't access the full article, but I do have thoughts on why people support Trump. Being from the US, I am for sure on the left, but live in a heavily right-leaning area and a religious college. Many of the people I've met cite Christianity when it comes to Trump, and often don't seem to think about it beyond that. I remember telling one of my peers about sexist remarks that Trump has made and he seemed completely unaware and even apologized to me later about not knowing.
This is odd to me considering that Trump's only policy that even tries to emulate "Christianity" as rural Americans understand it is abortion bans.
Those I've talked to who do acknowledge this tend to say that they voted for him either because the republican party is seen as "the christian party" to them, or because they view the democratic party and the left as fundamentally "anti-Christian".
This is what I've gathered from my own conversations and experiences in the US Midwest, but I will ask some of my peers for articles that they may feel are worth sharing on their viewpoints. Although I may not agree with them at all, it has been quite a thought-provoking experience in its own to see that many people who voted for Trump really only did it for one or two of his policies.
